The ST3 Programme Directors (ST3 PDs) run the weekly Day Release Course for the GP registrars (ST3).

The ST3 PDs, see pastoral care as a major part of their remit. They are all approachable and keen to help the registrars with any problems that affect their working lives. The vocational training scheme is intended to prepare registrars for a lifetime in general practice. The influence of the course extends onwards beyond training into GP registrars career pathways. The PDs want to hear how registrars are doing having left the course and to help if they need it.  The PDs are also keen to keep in touch with GP trainers. They'd love to hear from trainers with ideas about the Day Release Course, or if their registrars have areas of need with which the Day Release Course can help.

Ian Wyer works as a GP in Milborne Port, in North Dorset / South Somerset.

"I see my role as an educator as helping trainees to learn from experience and from each other - learn the things that can't easily be found in books. I want to help prepare our trainees to stay happy, healthy and up-to-date for the rest of their careers. My particular interests include communication skills and therapeutic consultations. My hobbies include relaxing with my family and getting outdoors - walking, mountain-biking and sailing."

On Wednesdays Ian is usually at Bournemouth House.  On other weekdays he is available at the practice.

Chris Elfes works as a Portfolio GP

"I have the privilege to be a GP, Trainer, Appraiser and VTS Programme Director. In addition I am a MRCGP Examiner as well as Lead for the  RCGP Essential Knowledge Challenges. I worked as a GP Partner for 14 years in Swanage and now have the luxury to live and work around beautiful Dorset. This, combined with family life and sailing keeps me busy and grounded in the reality of General Practice. The application of knowledge as well as the challenges and rewards of a busy life consulting in the emotional front-line of undifferentiated diagnostic uncertainty continue to enthuse me."

On Wednesdays he is usually at Bournemouth University.

Stephen Tomkins joined the Dorset GP Education Team in 2010.

"I have been working as a Partner at The Grove Surgery for the last 14 years. Over this time the surgery has grown from a small branch surgery to an independent three partner practice.

Over the last few years I have been heavily involved in local and national initiatives into Self Care - even at one stage involved co-writing a book - (this was a real challenge for me). One of the basis for self care is around patient education and this sparked a great interest in education. This led on to helping to train doctors at all levels into some techniques that can promote self care.

I was really pleased to become one of the team as it gives me the opportunity to really engage my enthusiasm fro education with my on going love for general practice - I feel very lucky.

Out side medicine I have four children, a wife and a love for many sports especially a great follower of Bath Rugby club.

I hope I can pass some of my positivity on to others at a very influential time in their lives and careers.

Please feel free to e-mail at the below link."

Tabitha Smith joined the GP Education Team in 2007 and she currently works as a salaried GP in Bournemouth.

"Being in the early years of my GP career I hope to be able to advise and support GP trainees facing the challenges of qualification and certification. I am also keen to ensure that GP registrars are provided with information and guidance about their career options at the end of their training. I'm passionate about small group work and aim to deliver quality teaching/discussion sessions in a supportive environment. Outside work I unwind by running in the beautiful New Forest and mountain biking with my husband."

On Wednesdays Tabitha is at Bournemouth House with the rest of the ST3 PD team. At other times she can be contacted by email.
