NQGP Educational Programme
Becoming a qualified and independent GP can be an exciting time. It can, however, feel quite daunting and lonely especially for those not working in a regular practice. Taking this into account, The Education Team was keen to provide Newly Qualified GPs with a form of ongoing support in the months immediately after completion of their ST3 year, easing the transition from ST3 to independent practitioner and learner.
Over the last two years we have arranged a monthly educational meeting for Newly Qualified GPs in Dorset. It begins in August just after most trainees have achieved their CCT and runs for a year. The first part of the programme (from August to December) involves case-based discussions on a certain clinical topic and is facilitated by a local Consultant. The second part of the programme (from January onwards) becomes more small group based, with the GPs themselves taking more control over the topics discussed and the format of the sessions. GPs are encouraged to bring along problems they have encountered in practice or questions for the Consultants regarding referral criteria, etc.
The education sessions are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Harbour Hospital in Poole (see map).
The evenings begin at 7pm with a complementary hot supper and the education session kicks off at 7.30. The evening comes to a close between 9-9.30pm when GPs are able to complete forms for feedback and to help with their CPD (continuing professional development) points for appraisal.
GPs have been encouraged to form small groups for ongoing CPD during and at the completion of these meetings. So far the meetings have been well received and we aim to continue this form of support in 2011.
