Three to four months into your ST3 year, you will have an interview with the Programme Director who leads your group on the DRC or with the local Associate Director of GP Education.

The 3 month interview has 3 main purposes:

  • The primary purpose is to allow the ST3 trainee to reflect on their training, both within the practice, self directed, and on the day release course. This is your opportunity to share achievements, and to flag up any issues you may have.
  • In addition, it allows your programme director [PD] to get to know more about your individual learning needs and plans.
  • Finally, it contributes to the long term monitoring of your practice’s educational performance.

The interview is confidential. This is so that you can freely discuss all aspects of your experience of the ST3 year. A report is written by the PD & trainee together which is sent to your trainer & the deanery. However the trainee has power of veto over what is written.

The limits of confidentiality are as follows:

  • Your interviewer may choose to discuss the interview with other members of the educational team (other PDs etc..)
  • Where issues affecting the quality of your training arise, we may help you to act to address them. If you feel you can resolve or cope with the issues alone we will respect this, so long as your overall training to be a GP will not be impaired.
  • Where issues are likely to affect future trainees the associate director’s office will amass data over time and use it anonymously to inform practice re-accreditation visits.
  • Where patient care is likely to be affected, breach of confidentiality may be necessary.
  • Wherever possible your agreement will be sought.

But, please remember, the 3 month interview is primarily for you.
