GP training is an opportunity for all established GPs.  We are lucky in Dorset to have a relative surfeit of GPs and GP trainers.  Currently there are 94 GP trainers, 13 Foundation Education Supervisors and 12 Retained Doctor Supervisors.  There are 48 training practices and 6 non training practices which take Foundation doctors

To become a trainer, it is necessary to have had 3 years experience following Completion of Certificate or Training (CCT).  GPs need to have been working in a practice for 1 year, either as a salaried GP or partner, working full or part time.
New trainers are required to attend a 6-day modular Prospective Trainer’s Course.  This comprises 3 two-day sessions over a 3-month period.  Prospective Trainer's are required to write a 1500 word dissertation to complete the course.  From 2010 this will form part of a Certificate in Medical Education which will be a requirement to be a GP trainer in Wessex.

Dates for GP Modular Course for Prospective GP Trainer

6 – 7 October 2011
17 – 18 November 2011
12 – 13 January 2012

The Trainer’s Course is compulsory, designed specifically for Trainers in their first 2 years of being a new Trainer.  It is a modular course comprising 4 half days and is aimed at ironing out some of the practical issues of being a new Trainer.  Courses can be booked on-line via Jane Carr in the Deanery Courses Centre Jane.Carr@wessexdeanery.nhs.uk or telephone 01962 718497
Established GP Trainers have to be revalidated every 3 years to remain a GP Trainer. Part of this process includes a practice re-approval visit. However it is also a compulsory requirement that established Trainers attend the Experienced Trainer’s Course every 3 years. Further information can be obtained from Jane Carr at the Deanery Courses Centre Jane.Carr@wessexdeanery.nhs.uk

Full time GP specialty trainees are based in GP practices for 7 sessions per week. GP Trainers are expected to provide clinical supervison for their GPST at all times, or in their absence to arrange for an alternative GP in the practice to act as a Clinical Supervisor.  A Trainer can be part time as long as they have direct supervision of the GPST for at least 50% of the GP Trainee’s working week.  Further guidance is available on the Deanery website.
