Study Leave

The Study Leave and Educational Guidelines can be downloaded from the links below. All employment documents can be accessed using the list on the right-hand side of these pages.

We encourage all trainees to make the most of their study leave during the ST1 and ST2 years. Study leave time allowances are good throughout the course, but funding is becoming increasingly scarce and unfortunately there is no funding for study leave during the registrar year.

The Day Release Course consists of 30 days per annum of mandatory study leave, plus a further 2 days for the residential courses.  In addition to this an ST3 is allowed 5 days of personal planned study leave plus 1 day to attend the AKT exam preparation course and 2 days to attend the CSA exam preparation course

Below are our recommendations for study leave. It should be obvious that some courses fit well with particular jobs. However you are not obliged to take leave relevant to your current job. Study should be relevant to your long term career goals.

Essential

Basic Life Support / Advanced Life Support (A valid ALS certificate or recent BLS training are essential for continuing practice as a GP – many practices provide annual BLS training)
