Trainers
Dr A F K Rutland
I have been a Trainer at Lilliput for the last 8 years, and have been lucky enough to help many excellent Trainees/Registrars through Summative Assessment and MRCGP. My teaching style is relaxed but enthusiastic. I enjoy allowing the Learner to lead Tutorials and to explore challenging areas and problems. Apart from Teaching, I also have an interest in Thoracic Medicine, Sports Medicine, and am involved with Practice Based Commissioning.
Dr Tanya Smith
I have been training since 2003 and have always had trainees since then including ST1/2s and returner level. I have worked in lots of different practices and also worked for 3 yrs in a hospice and have been a partner at Lilliput since 2000. I am particularly interested in consultation skills and love seeing the shift in trainees skills from hospital based to much more holistic skills by the end of the year. We are all looking forward to having trainees in our new building and you will find with all of us being trainers we adopt a very team like approach to training.
Dr Susan M Thomas
I have been a GP for 22 years and a trainer for 5 years. General practice has much of the practice of an art about it and I feel the trainer’s role is to help the trainee develop skills in that art- really an apprenticeship. As we have 4 (soon to be 5) trainers in the practice we are ideally placed to give support and mentoring to budding GPs throughout their development. I am particularly interested in trainees developing their communication skills alongside good clinical practice and learning to use the doctor – patient relationship as a diagnostic tool. Our fantastic new harbourside practice is the ideal learning environment as well!
We are lucky enough to have an excellent teaching environment at Lilliput Surgery, with all the Partners heavily involved, along with the support of the staff and attached Primary Health Care Team.
The most important aspect for us all is that Trainees should enjoy their time here, and leave looking forward to their ongoing career. The challenges of the nMRCGP and the fast changing world of General Practice are probably best met by having a good amount of fun while learning.
